While mere mention of the Mediterranean coastline of France's Cote d'Azur never fails to conjure up images of sun, sea and glamorous beach resorts, it is the dazzling array of small perfumeries in the hilltop town of Grasse further inland from the French Riviera that are regarded as the olfactory paradise of Europe. Here, few fragrances are more admired than those of the House of Fragonard.
Named after Grasse's most famous 18th century celebrity, the painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806), Parfumerie Fragonard was founded in 1926 by local art lover Eugène Fuchs. The entrepreneurial Fuchs decided to set up his own perfumery in the town after devising what was then a novel marketing concept – that of selling fragrances directly to the tourists who were keen to discover the charms of the Cote d'Azur in post-war France.
Ninety years later, Parfumerie Fragonard remains a small, family-owned company dedicated to the pursuit of quality. Riversdale Estate is proud to be associated with this legendary perfumery.
